Woven in Chettinad, Tamil Nadu.
Chettinad cotton comes off handlooms around Karaikudi, in the far south of Tamil Nadu. It is a heavier, tighter cotton than most, which is why it holds a crisp pleat instead of collapsing, and why it softens with every wash rather than wearing thin. The body and the border are woven in different colours on the same loom, not stitched together afterwards. Run your thumb along where the two meet when it arrives: you will feel the weave change, not a seam.
A dusty blue grey body, the colour coming from a navy warp crossed with a warmer weft, so it shifts slightly as the light moves. One navy and gold mango motif sits near the shoulder. The navy border is the statement: a broad mustard band of paisleys with floral centres, topped by a row of small leaf shapes.
Pure cotton, so it breathes through a Delhi summer. The greyed body is unusual for a Chettinad and reads more contemporary than the brighter pieces. Pair it with navy, or with white for summer.

Saree care
Dry clean for the first few washes, especially sarees with zari. Store folded in a cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight, and refold along different lines every few months so the zari does not crack at the creases.
