Woven in Chettinad, Tamil Nadu.
Chettinad cotton comes off handlooms around Karaikudi, in the far south of Tamil Nadu. It is a heavier, tighter cotton than most, which is why it holds a crisp pleat instead of collapsing, and why it softens with every wash rather than wearing thin. The body and the border are woven in different colours on the same loom, not stitched together afterwards. Run your thumb along where the two meet when it arrives: you will feel the weave change, not a seam.
A plain deep purple body, left almost entirely open, with one large mango motif worked in gold and silver near the pallu end. The border is copper, edged by a gold line and a set of fine purple stripes. Most of the saree is quiet, which is what makes the single motif read.
Pure cotton, so it breathes through a Delhi summer. The restraint is the point here, and purple against copper is an unusual pairing that photographs well. Pair it with copper, gold or plain black.

Saree care
Dry clean for the first few washes, especially sarees with zari. Store folded in a cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight, and refold along different lines every few months so the zari does not crack at the creases.
