Uppada Jamdani Silk Saree in Lavender with Gold Buttas

Woven in Uppada, Andhra Pradesh.

Jamdani is not embroidery and it is not printing. Every motif is built into the fabric as it is woven, thread by thread, using a supplementary weft the weaver places by hand. There is no shortcut version of this.

The result is a fabric with almost no weight. Hold it up and light passes through the ground while the motifs stay solid. It drapes closer to a chiffon than a silk, which is why it works in a Delhi summer where a Kanjivaram does not. Turn it over, the reverse is as clean as the front. That is the test.
